POTATOES:
CULTURE: Plant at or just before your last frost date. For optimum production, seed should be planted 4-6 inches deep, 12 inches apart, in rows 12-24 inches apart. Plant in loose, well drained soil. If soils are heavy, plant 2-3 inches deep and cover with 2-3 inches of mulch after planting. Application of a fertilizer that is low in nitrogen but high in phosphorous, such as bone meal, will greatly increase potato yields.
WATERING: Potatoes do need water on a regular basis to produce a respectable yield. Irrigate heavily when needed, and allow the soil to dry out somewhat. If you observe a deepening of the leaf color (almost a bluish tinge) on newly developing leaves at the plant tip, the crop is in need of water.
